The Question Library is a way for recruiters to deliver curated interview guides for a better candidate experience. Client administrators can design all aspects of interview questions for recruiters and hiring managers in an easy-to-use interface to ensure candidates have a consistent experience. You can quickly import questions to your question library to create custom interview guides to ensure a consistent, better hiring experience for your candidates.
When you import questions, you prepare a spreadsheet template with required and optional information about the questions and interview, then import the spreadsheet within your HireVue application.
Preparing your import template
To ensure your questions are available in the Question Library, you must import your questions via a .csv-UTF 8 file.
Important! Your columns must be the same as the template provided. Please see the bottom of this article for the template.
The column names are listed below with a brief description and the possible data options for that column. If the optional fields are missing in the import file, they will either be left blank, or a default will be added based on your application settings. If information is entered in a field that does not apply to your specific interview type, it will be ignored.
InterviewType (Required)
When you use HireVue to build your interview experience, you can use a combination of on-demand (voice, video, and text) and live (voice, video, and in-person) stages to help you quickly assess and select your ideal candidate.
When you create each stage, you select the interview type that best matches the candidate experience you want for that stage.
For this column, define which stage the question will be available for. Each question can only belong to one job stage. If you wish to use the same question for multiple job stages, you must duplicate the question for each desired stage.
Note: Use only the job stages for which your app is licensed.
Possible options:
- InPersonInterview
- PhoneInterview
- VideoInterview
- OnDemandVideoInterview
- OnDemandVoiceInterview
- OnDemandSmsInterview
QuestionType (Required)
Question types are categories of questions you can use when creating questions for stages. Question types do not define the way in which you provide instruction or context to a candidate. Rather, they specify the way in which you want to present the question or problem itself.

Note: To use audio, image, or video, you must know the associated Media Entry IDs.
QuestionText (Required)
Add the questions you want to ask candidates (for live interviews) or questions you want candidates to respond to (on-demand interviews).
For on-demand video interviews, you can use HTML tags. For on-demand text interviews, QuestionText must be less than 160 characters.
Scenario
Available for all interview types except on-demand voice. For on-demand video interviews, you can use HTML tags.
Note: Adding HTML tags to on-demand video or on-demand text questions will determine how the question is presented to the candidate. Adding HTML tags to live questions will determine how the question is presented to the interviewer.
Competency
Free form text field. This is displayed to the reviewer and available as a filter to help select questions to add to a stage.
Keywords
Free form text field. You can have multiple keywords by pipe-delimiting your list. Keywords are available as a filter to assist with selecting questions for a stage and not shown to candidate nor reviewers. Enter in text pipe-delimited, values are optional. Character limit is 512.
Example: |Continuous Learning | Developing Others | Coaching | Training|
IsResponseRequired
You can require the candidate to answer the question.
Possible Options:
- True
- False
ResponseType
You can configure the answer format that defines how candidates can respond to the question. Enter in text pipe-delimited, values are optional.
Best practice: Match your ResponseType to the InterviewType specified for the question for consistency in the application.
OnDemandVideo:
| Response Type | Description |
| Video | Use video responses if you want candidates to record a video of themselves answering the interview question. |
| Audio | Audio answers require candidates to record an audio clip of themselves answering the interview question. |
| Text | Allows candidates to answer questions by text. |
| MultipleChoice (Single Select) | Multiple choice answers require that candidates select one answer from a list when answering the interview question. For example, if you want candidates to answer a yes or no question, you can use a single select answer to ensure that they can only select one of the answer options that you provide (yes or no).
Note: ResponseChoices are required for this response type. |
| MultipleSelect | Multiple select answers require that candidates select one or more answers from a list when answering the interview question. For example, you can use multiple select answers to request that candidates select the shifts that they are available to work.
Note: ResponseChoices are required for this response type. |
| FillInTheBlank | Fill-in-the-blank answers require candidates to type answers to the interview question in the text fields provided. Text fields configured for the answer should match those described in the question. For example, if you want candidates to identify parts of an image, then you could use an image question, accompanied by a fill-in-the-blank answer. Candidates could then evaluate the image and type their answers in the fields provided.
Note: ResponseChoices are required for this response type. |
| Response Type | Description |
| Audio (Default) | Audio answers require candidates listen to the question, wait until they hear a beep, and then speak into the phone to answer the interview question. |
| MultipleChoice (Single Select) | Multiple choice answers require candidates select one answer from a list when answering the interview question. For example, if you want candidates to answer a yes or no question, you can use a multiple choice answer to ensure that they can only select one of the answer options that you provide (yes or no). When you use multiple choice answers in an on-demand voice interview, candidates are presented with a list of selections and asked to press the key that corresponds to their response. |
OnDemandText:
| Response Type | Description |
| Text | Text answers require that candidates type their response. Although candidates can type up to 1597 characters in their response, HireVue splits long messages into 160-character chunks to meet carrier restrictions. |
| MultipleChoice (Single Select) | Multiple choice answers require candidates select one response from a list when answering the interview question. When you use multiple choice answers in an on-demand text interview, candidates receive a text message that contains a question and list of possible responses, each with a corresponding number. Candidates send a return text with the number that matches their response. |
