Assessments
Assessments are pre-employment evaluations that recruiters can use to assess a candidate's skills, behavior, and personality. Results of an online assessment can be used to compare candidates to benchmarks, and then prioritize and advance the candidates who are the best fit for the job. Assessments are available for use within on-demand video/web and on-demand text interview stages.
Note: Assessments are a licensed feature in Hirevue, and may not be available for your application. See your system administrator for more information.
When you configure Hirevue to integrate supported assessment tools into the interview, you can use the results to:
- Provide additional insight during the candidate review process.
- Determine whether to automatically advance the candidate to the next stage.
- Send the candidate a candidate feedback report (CFR).
- Send the candidate a developmental feedback report (DFR).
How it works
Using assessments within the job
If assessments are licensed for your application and you have the permissions required to associate assessments with a job, you can use the Assessment section within the Assessments panel to select the candidate assessment type you want to use in your on-demand video/web or on-demand text interview stage. Only assessments that are licensed for your application will be available for selection.
When you select an assessment, you can also
- Select a related assessment package offered by the assessment provider.
- Determine whether you want the assessment to appear before or after questions in the interview flow.
- Determine whether you want candidates to automatically advance to the next stage based on their assessment score. In order for candidates to automatically advance based on assessment score, the subsequent stage must also be configured for automatic advancement based on assessment. For information about how to configure an stage for automatic advancement, see Add stages to a job.
- Determine whether you want to enable and send the candidate a candidate feedback report (CFR).
- Determine whether you want to enable a developmental feedback report (DFR).

This image displays an example of the Assessment section of the Assessment panel when Virtual Job Tryout is selected as the assessment provider. Recruiters using the assessment in this example
- Selected the Administrative package.
- Configured the assessment to appear before interview questions within the interview flow.
-
Indicated that candidates who earn an assessment score of 3 or more will automatically advance to the next stage when automatic advancement is configured for the stage. Submitted candidate stages are evaluated to determine whether they meet the configured score before advancing to the next stage.
Note: Your application may or may not be licensed to support these activities. For more information about your specific configuration, contact your System Administrator.
Candidate experience
On-demand stages that are configured to use assessments integrate the assessment seamlessly within the experience. Candidates use the email invitation to log in, and then progress through the configured flow. If candidates are completing an:
- On-demand video/web, then candidates complete the assessment within the on-demand video/web flow.
- On-demand text, then candidates click the link provided in either a text message (if HireVue has the mobile number of the candidate) or an email. The experience opens within a web browser, where candidates respond to questions (if configured) and complete the assessment.
The assessment can be configured to appear either before or after the question section. Candidates take the assessment within the on-demand flow, and when they are finished, submit their assessment along with their responses to any required questions.

This image displays the candidate experience for an on-demand video/web stage that includes a Virtual Job Tryout (VJT) assessment. Candidates can navigate to the assessment within the navigation bar and complete the required questions within the interview window.
Candidate feedback report
The Candidate Feedback Report (CFR) identifies the candidate's key strengths for the job family role corresponding with the assessment the candidate completed. The strengths relate to the attributes that are often found important for success in the job family role. The report is provided as a reference for the candidate and a symbol of appreciation for taking the time to complete the assessment.
See an example of the Candidate Feedback Report
Candidates can access the CFR via a link provided in their post-assessment email or on the candidate dashboard.
The CFR must be enabled during stage creation.
Note: The CFR is a licensed feature in Hirevue and may not be available for your application. See your Hirevue system administrator for more information.
Developmental feedback report
The Developmental Feedback Report (DFR) is valuable for supporting on-boarding and ongoing development activities. It can be useful to review when setting development goals when an individual is changing roles or job assignments. The report displays as many as five strengths to leverage and three areas of opportunity based on the individual's assessment performance. For each opportunity, there are development tips presented with insights on how to improve in the future. Strengths and opportunities are based on the candidate's own top and bottom scores, so there is no comparison with other candidates.
See an example of the Developmental Feedback Report
The DFR can be viewed either from the candidate menu on the Review page or the candidate card within the job stage.
You can send the candidate the DFR via the Email Report button on the Developmental Feedback page accessed from the areas described above.
The DFR must be enabled during stage creation.
Note: The DFR is a licensed feature in Hirevue and may not be available for your application. See your Hirevue system administrator for more information.
Reviewing assessment scores
Applications that use the VJT assessment can be licensed to either display or hide the assessment score. If your application is licensed to hide the score then you will not be able to filter on VJT assessment score, or see scores on the candidate card.
However, if your application is licensed to view assessment scores, then you can review candidate assessment scores for on-demand video/web and on-demand text stages in the following places:
Interview stage filter
The Stage page displays a summary of the progress for each stage in your job. For on-demand stages that include assessments, you can use the filter and sort option to display only those candidates that achieve a specific score on their assessment.
This example shows an on-demand stage filter that is configured to use VJT assessments to evaluate candidates.
Candidate card
Candidate cards for on-demand stages that require assessments display the submitted assessment score directly on the card. This allows you to quickly evaluate and compare candidates based on their scores. For more information, see Job summary (ratings indicators).
This image displays an example candidate card with a VJT assessment score of 4 (Excellent Fit).
Review page
You can review assessment results for on-demand stages on the Assessment tab of the review page.
The review page displays the candidate fit information as well as a See Assessment link which allows you to view all of the assessment scores on the Assessment tab.
Assessment tab
The Assessment tab displays all of the candidate assessment scores, the overall result, and a link to the Candidate Profile Report.
Candidate Profile Report
The Candidate Profile Report is available from the View Report link on the Assessment tab. This report provides an indication of how well the candidate is likely to perform in the role. The candidate profile provides fit scores on a variety of competencies critical for success in the role. These competencies are customized to the role.
The report is divided into three sections:
- Overall Fit
- Competency Fit
- Work History Probes
