- Creating and configuring new custom questions.
- Adding questions from your Question Library.
- Adding AI scored questions.
- Searching for pre-defined questions with Builder .
- View or edit questions defined for the selected stage.
- Change the order of questions for the selected stage.
- Remove questions from the selected stage.

Creating or editing questions
When you are ready to add questions to the stage, you can select:
- Add Question to create a new question.
- Add Question from Library to select a question from your organization's Question Library. Once you add a question from the library into the stage, you can then hover over the question and select the Edit icon to customize the question to fit your needs.
- Add AI scored Question to select a pre-configured scored question that can be automatically scored by artificial intelligence for on-demand video interviews.
- Open Builder to search for and add a pre-defined question created by HireVue's team of industrial-organizational psychologists.
Note: AI scored and Builder are licensed features and may not be available for your application. Contact your Hirevue system administrator for more information.
When you add a question to the stage, you can then use the Interview Questions settings to define and configure the following areas:
Questions
Creating the questions you want to ask candidates is a key part of building jobs in Hirevue. When you create a new question for an interview, you configure the question with a question type that specifies exactly how the question will be presented to candidates. The question types and resulting candidate experience vary based on the interview stage you are configuring.
Answer format
When you create a new question for an on-demand interview, you also configure an answer format that defines how candidates can respond to the question.
Depending on the answer type you are configuring, you'll have additional options that allow you to control items such as:
- How long the candidate can take to reply to the question.
- Whether the candidate can re-record their answer.
- How much think time the candidate is allowed before they are required to answer.
The answer types and resulting candidate experience vary based on the stage you are configuring. Select the following links to learn more:
Review format
When you add questions to a stage, you also configure a review format that specifies the type of feedback you want to collect from anyone reviewing the interview. See the following links for each available field and how to configure it to meet your needs.
Reviewer instructions
Instructions that you want to display to reviewers within the Rating/Feedback area. Use this field to provide detailed information about how you want reviewers to provide their feedback.
For example, you can use this area to provide information about what characteristics you want reviewers to look for when evaluating candidates. Below is an example of instructions that help reviewers to understand both effective and ineffective indicators. Understanding what makes a candidate effective or ineffective helps them to evaluate the candidate's responses more consistently.
Allow reviewer to add notes
Adds a free text field to the Rating/Feedback section for each question in the candidate's interview where reviewers can type their feedback and comments about the candidate's response.
Note: This field is a licensed feature and may not be available for your application. For more information about your specific application configuration, contact your system administrator.
Note: Use caution when allowing reviewers to add notes, as the feedback submitted by the reviewer is stored in the candidate record indefinitely. Any notes submitted by reviewers as part of their review are stored in the HireVue system and are accessible by anyone with appropriate credentials. Inappropriate or discriminatory comments made by reviewers could result in potential compliance issues.
Below is an example of the Feedback/Comments text box that appears when questions have the "Allow reviewer to add notes" option turned on.
Review type
Following are the review types supported by Hirevue.
Multiple select
Allows reviewers to select multiple responses from a list when providing their feedback.
When configuring multiple select review types, you can also assign scores to each selection. When you assign scores to a multiple select answer, you can rate and advance candidates based on the reviewer score they receive.
See example
If you want to rate candidates based on their certifications, then you can create a multiple select review type for the question and ask reviewers to select all certifications that apply. You can assign a high score to the most important certifications, and a lower score to the least important.
The following example illustrates this configuration.
When reviewing the candidate response, reviewers can select each option they feel applies to the candidate. Reviewers are not able to see the scores you have assigned to each response.
Based on your interview stage configuration, candidates with a high score will either automatically advance or be eligible for manual advancement. Candidates with a low score can be immediately disqualified.
None
Does not require a reviewer response. Reviewers watch the video or review the question response and then proceed to the next question without providing feedback. If question-level review is not turned on for your application, then depending on your licensing settings, reviewers may still be able to provide notes about the interview as a whole.
Single select
Requires that reviewers select one response from a list when providing their feedback. For example, if you want reviewers to select from options that describe how they feel candidates meet the expectations they have for the job, you can use a single select review type and configure it with options associated with scores ranging from 0 to 5. The following example illustrates this configuration.
After reviewing the candidate's response, reviewers can then select the option that best describes how they feel about the candidate. The following image is an example of the reviewer experience when the Single Select review type is used.
Text
Allows reviewers to type their review comments in a free form text field.
The following image is an example of what appears when the text review type is used.
Review is required
Prevents reviewers from submitting their feedback until they complete the question-level review. Questions that require reviews are marked with a red "Review Required" indicator.
Viewing questions
If you have already added questions to a stage, then you can select Interview Questions on the stage to expose a table listing the questions added to the stage. Within this table, you can review key attributes of the questions, such as question and response type, question text, time limit, and recording mode.
You can also hover over the table to show a toolbar, then edit the questions, change the order of the questions, or even remove them from the stage.
Bulk delete or move questions
Within the question list table, an Actions menu has been added to the Interview Questions section of a job stage to support bulk actions to the questions list. The Actions menu only displays when one or more questions are selected.
- Available actions under the menu are:
- Delete – Deletes the selected questions from the question list.
- Move to top – Moves selected questions to the top of the question list.
- Move to bottom – Moves selected questions to the bottom of the question list.
